At its peak, the project had 410 operatives on site and 4100 overall across the entire build lifecycle. To ensure site operations ran smoothly, Morgan Sindall Construction, principal contractor on the site, opted for MSite’s Access & Attendance, Online Inductions and Delivery Management solutions. By leveraging MSite’s advanced digital technology, Morgan Sindall was able to report against various site KPI’s, which are demonstrated in the insights above and below.

To get the most out of the MSite platform, Morgan Sindall utilised a multitude of MSite hardware and software solutions to streamline various on-site processes. In particular, the MSite Online Inductions and Training module allowed 95% of the workforce to pre-register themselves and watch part of the induction before arriving on site, helping save 9,400 cumulative working hours over the course of the project.

We asked Ben Wolstenholme, Senior Project Manager on the project, to share his experience of the solution:“It really trims down the induction time, since it allows statuary and central information to be issued to the workforce via video, which only leaves us with the site-specific information. Another benefit to this is that it allows information to be digested over a couple of sessions rather than one big one, helping better inform the workforce.” He went on to say: “The compliance checks MSite does on CSCS cards and Right to Work documents is useful too, saving time for our site managers as they no longer need to manually review and check them.”

We spoke with Beth Boden, Document Controller on the site, to understand how MSite’s Online Inductions & Training module complemented her role: “MSite makes it easier to vet everyone who comes onto the job, everyone is already inducted so all I need to do it capture their biometric and they are good to go. Reporting is a lot simpler too, I don’t need to sift through paper forms to work out total hours and sub-contractor times - it’s just a few clicks and I can generate one instantly.”

"We can quickly ascertain whether our supply chain partners are employing locally and how many apprentices and trainees are being provided with opportunities on the project. We can also monitor demographics such as ethnicity and gender to help us learn about our workforce and become a more inclusive and diverse organisation."

The site team opted for several MSite PODs to work alongside the Online Inductions software, which would automatically restrict site access if workers didn’t have the correct permissions. We asked Ben his thoughts: “MSite provides us with a full access & attendance system, integrating it with the online inductions software helps us ensure everyone on site is inducted and trained in their respective roles. And by knowing exactly who is on site, this provides me with key workforce performance and safety insight. For example, I can see exactly how many supervisors or fire marshals are on site at any one time, so I know instantly if I need more. He continued: “The MSite Access Control system allows the gateman to be in control, meaning our site managers can focus on more important tasks. Also, when the pandemic kicked in, I thought the MSite Workforce App was a great COVID response tool and worked well as a contactless solution with our existing fingerprint readers.”

A total of 2700 material deliveries, spanning across 5 delivery gates were managed through MSite’s Delivery Management software during the completion of the Spine. Ben commented: “MSite’s Delivery Management solution helped us engage with our supply chain for deliveries, allowing us to book all subs into a particular gate and ensure it wasn’t overwhelmed. We often had three different contractors using one gate and if not managed properly, the gate could quickly become congested. The system helped us better allocate our crane resource across the multitude of gates for unloading too."

He summarised saying: “It also brought the added benefit of enabling us to quickly gather data and evidence to support our social value reporting to the client. We can quickly ascertain whether our supply chain partners are employing locally and how many apprentices and trainees are being provided with opportunities on the project. We can also monitor demographics such as ethnicity and gender (where provided) to help us learn about our workforce and become a more inclusive and diverse organisation.”
