Digital Workforce Management

What is digital workforce management?

Digital workforce management, or digitisation, is the ability to record the activities of your construction site workforce in a digital format. This allows managers and supervisors to review and manage workforce information easily and in real-time - increasing efficiency and productivity, whilst still being compliant with best practice safety methods.

A digital workforce management system will also enable contractors to combine resources throughout the build process and to adapt this schedule as and when - to ensure a fully cost-effective plan, no matter what delays or issues are encountered.

Whilst this digitisation is of benefit to all construction companies, larger-scale operators will benefit hugely from being able to analyse data from across all of their sites - ensuring efficiency, understanding safety records across all trades and also allowing for reviewing how sub-contractors are performing against each other.

Digital workforce management provides construction companies with real-time and post-build insights that will help to drive and improve decision-making for better productivity levels.

Five examples of how a digital workforce management system can improve your construction company

1. Digital Identities

Digital identities can be given to all employees via their mobile phone, meaning that workers can be given the rights to authorise digital transactions, (electronic goods receipting, for example) which, in the past, could have been a big job for ensuring true cost management and reconciliation.

These identities can also be used to control the use of certain site equipment to those members of the workforce who have the relevant training.

2. Task Allocation & Capture

A key problem in the construction industry, and one that can result in inefficiency, is for trade tasks to not be properly ordered during a build. Of course, some processes may take longer than originally planned due to unforeseen circumstances, however, being able to minimise the knock-on effects of this can mean a build staying on track as much as possible.

To do this, task allocation and capture from digital workforce management systems give supervisors the ability to understand the process of activities in real-time, enabling them to draw up better short-term plans that can be implemented to reduce delays and avoid any resources being inactive.

3. Dynamic snagging

Dynamic snagging is another way of minimising any potential delays during a build. Although snagging systems already exist and can help keep a record of any defects, they do not benefit from being able to see what trades or particular workers are available on-site who can address the issues, thereby limiting delays.

4. Safety Passports

Something that is very necessary but that can also take up a lot of time on a build, with so many workers across multiple sites, is having safety credentials validated or the process of repeating safety inductions. The time spent on this can be significantly reduced by incorporating a universal safety passport that draws from and complements schemes that are already in place, such as the CSCS.

5. Direct Comms

Finding an effective way to communicate with your workforce can be challenging for any business but when a company has workers spread across multiple sites, it becomes an even more difficult task.

Something that the COVID-19 pandemic has taught us is that having an effective way of communicating with every employee is invaluable and implementing a digital workforce management system is a very effective way of doing this.
